Neil studied during an era when drawing skills were a prime objective. The coastline of South East England provided endless maritime subjects for sketch books, and today he is renowned for keeping meticulous journals of pictorial discoveries.
During the 50’s Neil was influenced by the Neo-Romantic artists who were prominent in the post-war decade. In particular, John Piper, John Minton, and Edward Bawden.
In 1980 Neil was elected a member or the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour, and in 1992 was winner of the Windsor and Newton Anniversary Award at the RI Annual Exhibition.
In 1986 Neil taught full-time in major colleges - for fourteen years he was Director of Foundation Studies and finally a visiting Professor of Illustration.
Today Neil works with a bold linear design and bright colour, chiefly in water colour, to produce intense pictures which celebrate the joy he derives from marine subjects
In 1995 Neil and his wife Margaret settled in the ancient Cinque Port of Rye and founded the Warehouse Studio, as their home base for working and teaching.
Neil exhibits in London and many provincial galleries.
